This marvellous plant used to be a pile of torn-out weeds our landlord dumped on our patio to discard later. This is the amazing thing about England. You stick anything into the ground (or anywhere near it) and it grows roots. Plants that struggle in other countries, even if they have their own gardener, grow wild and rampant here. This ex-pile of weed has rooted itself through a crack in the concrete and grown into a man-sized bush of - I think - lilac in the space of a year. It is now in bloom and smells wonderful.

We had no idea we were allowed to go in there. But it turned out we were, and so Jeb and I were lying in the grass, looking up at the branches and the sky and feeling perfectly at peace.

This is what I really love about England... the trees look like props for a fantasy film... all covered in ivy.
